Planning begins for Oct. 12 Bike/Walk
Madison County Greenways and Trails, Inc. is joining with a number of local and state agencies to promote the healthy benefits of walking and biking.
The local effort at Battlefield Park on Oct. 12, the second Sunday in October, is part of a statewide effort to curb obesity in children and adults by encouraging exercise. Representatives from the Madison County Cooperative Extension Office, Madison County Health Department and Madison County Greenways and Trails are in the initial planning stages of the Second Sunday Walk/Bike Madison County on the Battlefield event. Other community partners will be asked to join in the planning for the event in the near future. Golf course paths and park trails will be open to non-motorized traffic only from 2 to 6 p.m. Oct. 12 at Battlefield Park and golf course on US 421. Prizes will be given to the three teams with the most participants and water bottles will be available to the first 200 who register. Bike Helmet Project started
At the July meeting we voted to place $225 into a fund to set up a Bicycle Helmet Community Service Project. Lloyd Jordison has volunteered to chair the committee organizing the project. We plan to purchase helmets to give to children in our county in need of bike helmets and to insure that helmets are included when bicycles are given as gifts and prizes. If you can help with the committee to set up specifics as to how this project will work, please contact Lloyd .
